Cities are places of dual nature. They are places where you can pursue your dreams, party without limits and fall in love and find true friends. They are also places where you can fail to reach what you set out to do, be sucked into destructive cycles of hedonism and become isolated from everyone else.

Many are drawn in to them by grand promises, only to become sorely disapointed and consumed by the vast economic machinery that allows some fortunate few to live out their wildest fantasies.

As societies become more and more connected and their vast urban hubs more tangled, so do the risks. As seasons pass, we may live to see an age where places we thought eternal are wiped out by the seeds of destruction inherent in every system.

The second album from Kizunaut explores these themes of urban life and their contradictions through alt rock, synthpop and industrial infused retrowave. Emotional and powerful, The City by the Sea is a typhoon of an album even without the vocals.

I’ve always loved the funky side of Alpha. But the dark, wonderfully creepy ballads shine on this album! Tracks like Snuff ‘Em Out (my fav thx to a vid Alpha shared last month), Veins or Meat Ribbons are amazing. Synthwave sounds stale to me lately because of similar sound, omnipresent arpeggiators, weak melodies and basic harmonic structure, but Alpha’s unusual chord progressions as well as comparatively exotic melodies entertain me. I’ll be returning to this EP a lot; happy for the cas Tichounko
